Chapter 29

I’m still shaking as I sit down in the town’s cozy diner next to Auntie an hour and a half later.

She pats my arm and nods to the doorway. “There’s Trevor and the girls.”

“You invited them?” My words rattle out between my chattering teeth. God, I was so scared. Her gasps for each lungful of breath shook me. It’s closer than I thought. I’m not ready—not now, not ever.

A voice whispers back, but she is.

I glance quickly at her and note the forced smile as the others join us. Her strength is giving out. Returning the pat on her arm, I decide to let her rest instead of entertain us the way she usually does.

I say to Trevor and the ladies, “Come, sit, tell me what’s good here. I haven’t been since the new owners took over.”

“The meatloaf is excellent,” Gwen points out.

“Pot roast,” Trevor says. “Just like my mom’s.” He looks around the half-filled place and lifts a hand in greeting to a couple of guys at another table. “Yo, how’s it going?”

“You dog, Trev. You still got all the ladies to yourself,” the bearded one says, shaking his head in disgust.

“Eat your heart out, brother,” he says, putting an arm around Sylvia.

The two ladies giggle like school girls.

Trevor winks at me and lays on the charm even more. “Mmm, that perfume you’re wearing is so alluring, Sylvia.”

Two pink dots color her cheeks. She swats his arm. “Oh, stop.”

“I can’t help myself. It turns me on.”

This time, I cover my mouth with my napkin and chuckle into it. God, he’s good.

“I’m a tiger in bed,” she whispers loudly, shrugging as if she can’t help herself.

“Claws and all?” He raises and lowers his eyebrows.

“I can do that,” Gwen chimes in. “My first lover—”

She stops abruptly as a middle-aged man approaches and looks at her with his jaw open. “Excuse me.” He tries to look away, but can’t seem to and looks her up and down.

Gwen preens before him, batting her eyelashes.

He coughs, and then clears his throat. “I’m Marco, the owner. If you’re ready to order...”

I see Auntie leaning back in her chair, forcing another smile. I jump in before she has to put forth any effort. “We’re happy to meet you.” I quickly introduce everyone. “What’s the special for today?”

“Salisbury steak smothered with onions and gravy. Mashed potatoes with green beans. Either coffee or soda. And for dessert, ah, ah...” He seems to lose steam now. His face turns red. “I’m sorry. My wife, she’s got the morning sickness. She usually makes all the desserts.”

Gwen pops open her purse and says, “Oh, that’s all right, I saved a blueberry muffin that Maggie made this morning.” She pulls out the oversized plastic-wrapped treat. Her cheeks turn pink as she says to me, “I hope you don’t mind, dear. They were so delicious.”

I shake my head, actually pleased by the compliment. “Not at all. I baked enough for an army.”

Marco looks at me. “You bake?”

Now it’s my turn to feel the color warm my face.
